Everything you need to know before, during, and after your laser hair removal treatments.

Your Questions Answered

General

Laser hair removal provides long-term, significant hair reduction — typically 80–90% permanent reduction after a complete course. Some hair may regrow over time, usually finer and lighter. Occasional maintenance sessions (once a year or less) can maintain results.
Waxing and shaving remove hair at the surface — they don't affect the follicle, so hair grows back fully within days to weeks. Laser targets the follicle itself, progressively disabling its ability to produce hair. Over a course of sessions, the difference is dramatic: far less hair, finer texture, and no ingrown hairs.
Most clients need 6–8 sessions. Facial areas often require 8–10 sessions due to hormonal hair growth. The exact number depends on your hair colour, skin type, treatment area, and response to treatment. Your practitioner will give you a personalized estimate at your consultation.
Laser works best on dark hair — it targets melanin pigment. Our technology is suitable for a wide range of skin types, including darker skin tones. Blonde, grey, or white hair responds poorly as there is little pigment for the laser to target. During your consultation we will assess your suitability honestly and thoroughly.

Treatment

Most clients describe it as a mild snapping or warming sensation — similar to a rubber band flick. Modern lasers use cooling technology to minimize discomfort. Sensitive areas like the upper lip or bikini zone may feel slightly more noticeable, but sessions are brief. Most people tolerate it well with no numbing required.
Treatment time varies by area. Small areas like the upper lip take 5–10 minutes. Underarms take 15–20 minutes. Larger areas like full legs can take 45–60 minutes. We always allow extra time to ensure thorough coverage — we don't rush treatments.
Sessions are spaced to align with hair growth cycles. Facial areas: every 4–5 weeks. Body areas: every 6–8 weeks. Your practitioner will schedule your sessions at the optimal intervals for best results.
You may notice hair shedding within 1–3 weeks after your first session. Significant reduction typically becomes visible after the 3rd or 4th session. Results build progressively with each treatment. By the end of a full course, most clients see dramatically less hair growth.
Our technology is selected to safely treat a broad range of skin tones, including Fitzpatrick types I through VI. We assess each client individually and adjust laser settings accordingly. Darker skin types require specific wavelengths and parameters to ensure both safety and efficacy — we have the training and technology to accommodate this.

Safety

Yes. Laser hair removal has an excellent safety record when performed by a trained specialist using appropriate technology. We adhere strictly to laser safety protocols, conduct thorough skin assessments before each session, and follow Health Canada guidelines.
Common, temporary side effects include redness, mild swelling, and sensitivity in the treated area for a few hours after treatment — similar to a mild sunburn. These resolve quickly. Rare side effects (blistering, pigment changes) are significantly reduced when protocols are followed correctly, which is why choosing a qualified practitioner matters.
Some conditions may require modified protocols or postponed treatment, including: pregnancy, active skin infections, recent sun exposure or tanning, use of photosensitizing medications (e.g. certain antibiotics or Accutane), and certain medical conditions. We conduct a thorough health intake at your consultation to identify any concerns.
Many clients with sensitive skin do well with laser hair removal. We use cooling technology and adjust settings for comfort and safety. We'll discuss your skin history during consultation and customize your treatment accordingly.

Preparation

  • Shave the treatment area 24–48 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 4–6 weeks
  • Stop waxing, plucking, or electrolysis for at least 4–6 weeks prior
  • Do not apply lotion, deodorant, or perfume to treatment areas on appointment day
  • Inform us of any medications you're taking
Yes — in fact, you should shave 24–48 hours before your appointment. The laser needs to target the follicle below the skin, not the surface hair. Never wax, pluck, or use epilators in the weeks before treatment as these remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
Avoid: sun exposure and tanning (4–6 weeks), waxing/plucking (4–6 weeks), Retinoids/Retin-A (2 weeks), spray tan or self-tanner (2 weeks), photosensitizing medications without medical clearance, and alcohol the night before if your skin tends to be sensitive.

Aftercare

  • Apply a cooling gel or aloe vera to soothe any redness
  • Keep treated areas out of direct sun for at least 2 weeks
  • Use SPF 30+ daily on treated areas exposed to sun
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours
  • You may shave between sessions but do not wax or pluck
Yes — mild redness, sensitivity, and warmth in the treated area for a few hours are completely normal. This is a sign the laser worked as intended. It typically resolves within 2–24 hours. If you experience unusual swelling, blistering, or prolonged discomfort, contact us promptly.
We recommend avoiding intense exercise, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours after treatment. Heat and sweat can irritate the treated skin. Light activity is generally fine if the area is covered and protected.
Yes, this is normal and expected. In the 1–3 weeks after treatment, treated hairs push to the surface and shed — what looks like growth is actually the follicle expelling dead hair. Do not wax or pluck; you can gently exfoliate to assist shedding. You'll notice progressively less growth with each session.
